The Roses: California doubles discovered in Devon
2025 saw the exciting release of dark comedy The Roses, starring British actors Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, along with Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa.
The film, a reimagining of 1980s The War of the Roses, also stars Devon, primarily the south coast and Salcombe, where the Winking Prawn beachside restaurant was transformed into fictional crab shack, We’ve Got Crabs!
Director Jay Roach instantly recognised the potential in Devon’s sparkly waters and laidback charm, visualising this picturesque part of the coastline as a convincing double for Northern California, where the film is set. As well as North Sands and pockets of Salcombe, stretches of nearby Blackpool Sands were also used for filming.
As for Roach, so taken was he with this part of Devon that he’s trying to figure out how to spend more time here. I think we can help with that!
