Devon films shine in the Exmouth Film Festival

The Exmouth Film Festival launches its highly anticipated third edition from November 18 to 22, 2026, leading its homegrown lineup with the captivating Devon-made feature, Derek vs Derek.

This centerpiece film perfectly sets the tone for a community-focused celebration that places a glittering spotlight on regional independent cinema. Derek vs Derek embodies the authentic, fiercely independent storytelling the region represents.

The festival’s opening night at the Scott Cinemas pairs this local triumph with other Devon connections, including a special screening of The Ballad of Wallis Island. A massive critical hit at the Sundance Film Festival and a BAFTA nominee, the film stars Oscar-nominated actor and Devon resident Carey Mulligan, drawing immediate local pride to the opening festivities.

The true heartbeat of the festival lies in its dedication to stories crafted right on its doorstep. Audiences can catch Jo in the Water, an Exmouth-centred documentary that follows local sea swimmer Jo Bateman as she takes on a major water company over sewage pollution.

Beyond feature lengths, the festival champions rising regional creators through its dedicated South West Short Film evening. This vibrant showcase serves as a crucial launchpad for developing writers, directors, and producers to exhibit multi-dimensional works.

The Exmouth Film Festival successfully proves that some of the most compelling and urgent stories in cinema are being told by the voices of Devon.
