Plans for the weekend? We’re sharing news of a brilliant – and FREE – event taking place in Ilfracombe, featuring Devon talent!
This Saturday 20th June sees the Refugee Week Film Festival taking place at the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe.
Hosted by the Pickwell Foundation, the event forms part of Refugee Week, and features a curated line-up of emotive and thought-provoking films from across the world. One of them, the Afghan Welcome Project is a short film edited by Becky Hutner and directed and shot by EMMY-winning Mikey Corker, both Devon talents.
Launching at the festival, the film aims to raise awareness about this new government programme and encourage people to join in welcoming Afghan refugee families – many of whom supported the British military and were then targeted by the Taliban – through community sponsorship. It shares the real-life experiences of Afghan refugee families finding safety in the UK and the local people who help them find a community and rebuild their lives. Led by people with first-hand experience of community sponsorship, the project is rooted in nearly a decade of learning what truly supports welcome to work – in towns, cities and villages across the UK.
The screening will be accompanied by a panel talk, which Becky will be speaking on, so it promises to be an inspiring afternoon.
And did we mention it’s free?
Go along and show your support for this incredible event and all of the talented filmmakers if you can.
